My fathers true ghost story!

Submitted by Katie

I wanted to share with you an experience that happened to my father many years ago. He used to tell me this story when I was a kid, and it would scare the heck out of me. Whenever we'd pass this house, I'd get a chill. Let me give a quick description. This house was massive. Gothic in architecture, with lots of high gables. Even if it wasn't haunted, it would sure look the part! It was set behind a large stand of pine trees, and was set back from the road a goodly distance, with a long driveway, ending in a iron gate. Very creepy looking. My dad was a house painter, and was working at this house outside of Denver, CO. The name of the estate escapes me, but I think it's something like Marymark or Markam. Anyway, this house has been featured in a few books on the paranormal, and in collections of ghost stories, such as "Haunted America". At one point my father was working in this house late one night with another painter. They were the only people in the house that night, trying to finish up the jobs they were working on. My father was in one wing of the house, and the other man was in the opposite wing. Suddenly, the lights in the room turned off. When my dad went to check, he found that the switch had been physically turned off. Thinking his co-worker was playing a trick, as they both knew the place was supposed to be haunted, my dad just turned it back on, and went back to work. As soon as he climbed back up on his ladder, it happened again. Getting annoyed, he went down and turned the light back on, yelling at his friend to cut it out. As he turned his back, it went off again. He ran into the hall, but couldn't see anyone. Curious, he went down the hall to the other wing, and found his friend in there working. This place is huge, and there was no way the other guy could've turned the light off and gotten back to the room he was working on without my dad seeing him. When my dad told him what happened, they both decided to call it a night, as they were quite spooked. A few days later, they were working late in the house again by themselves. This time, they shared an experience, that left them so frightened that they wouldn't stay in the house after dark. Again, they were in opposite wings of the house. Suddenly they heard a crash from the front hall. Running to the entryway, of which they were on opposite sides, they could see the front door standing open, and could hear footfalls crossing to the back of the house. These footsteps went right by them. Without a second thought, they ran out the door, leaving lights on and everything, locked up, and left. As my dad was driving down the driveway, he looked back at the house, and saw that every light that they had left on, was now turned off. My father is a very truthful man, and wouldn't make these things up. Later, as I was reading about this house I read of other's experiences in this house that matched his. Including the explanation of why the lights turned off. At one time, an early owner living in the house decided to add electricity. His wife hated it, thinking the lighting was too harsh. She'd have fits when she'd come home, and see it blazing, so she'd go around the house turning off all the lights. Her husband would walk behind her, and turn them all back on. The owner that my father knew, who lived there in the 1960s, also said that the family would come home and find all the lights on in the house, or, would drive up to find everything that they had left on when they departed, turned off. They also had experiences with the front door opening on its own, as well as many other things that happened in the house. My dad and I were talking about this one time, and I mentioned to him about the owner and his wife that would fight over the lights. He was stunned. He never knew about that story, but was amazed at how it fit. He was a die hard skeptic before this happened to him, but now, he's a firm believer in spirits.
