Ghostly prankster at Gettysburg! . Submitted by Kristin: TobyBup@aol.com .
As promised, I am writing to share with you my most recent
ghostly encounters at Gettysburg. This one was at the hotel I stayed in. It
all began when I had decided to go for a swim in the pool. It was about
9:30pm. I had no sooner entered the pool area when the lights went out.
Needless to say there was much noise as people hurried out of the pool to
alert the front desk. As for me, I thought it was cool to swim in the dark. I
never paid any attention to the possibility that I was in for a night of
ghostly teasing. Back at the room.....in the bed room portion of the suite I
was in, the lamp by the bed was not functioning. We called maintenance to come
and fix the problem. The maintenance man tried everything from testing the
current in the socket to changing the entire lamp fixture.....nothing helped.
He ended up feeding a 20 foot extension cord from the living room area into
the bed room and that did the trick. At this time, a ghostly prankster was
still the furthest thought from my mind. Next, I began to prepare to hop into
bed. (Now I am one of those people who cannot sleep in a stuffy room....I jack
up the AC as soon as I arrive to a hotel and never shut it off for my entire
stay.) I no sooner get under my covers when the AC shuts off. Annoyed, I
stumble out of bed and across the room to kick the darn thing. It was
completely dead! My sister (whom if you haven't already guessed, always
accompanies me on my trips) tried to play with the controls as well....to no
avail. We were not about to call maintenance again, so we resolved to try to
sleep despite the stuffiness. I suppose it was the fact that, in frustration,
I gave up on the pranks "he" was playing that caused our
"visitor" to go a step or two further. The lights had been turned
off for about 25 minutes when I was startled by a loud metallic
"CLANK." The first thought I had was "that sounded like a
canteen or bayonet dropping." But of course I forced myself to look for a
more logical explanation such as "Maybe Heather fell out of bed."
(LOL) I jumped up to find that there was no visible source to what my ears
heard. I was too tired to puzzle about it, so I turned back to the pillow and
fell asleep. At about 2:00am, I awoke once again. I had had enough of the heat
and was bent on fixing the AC if it was going to be the death of me. I no
sooner reached the AC when all by itself it cranked up and remained on for the
duration of my stay. The next morning, Heather said she felt as if there was a
man standing next to her bed all night long, watching her sleep. Now I began
to wonder. I put all of the events of the night together beginning with the
pool. A knock at that door paused my thoughts for a moment...it was a
different maintenance man come to fix the bed room lamp. He unplugged the
extension and placed the lamp's cord into the outlet and viola.....it worked.
I chuckled at him and said "it must be the ghost." He turned to me
very seriously and replied "Have you seen him? He only comes out at night
to play with guests. He's a Confederate soldier." Glad to be back. I'll
write again soon. :) Kristin (TobyBup)
