Kristin says, Hi Jim, Welcome back from Gettysburg. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do when I go back.  And I also hope that you've returned with some adventures of your own.

Most ghostly activity in Gettysburg happens during the summer months due to the timing of the actual battle on July 1, 2, & 3 1863.  That's not to say that all ghostly activity takes a break for the winter.  It was in November that my sister and I returned to Gettysburg, eager to see (or hear for that matter) what else the spirits had to teach us.  We had spent almost the entire day on the battle field itself and it was nearing 3:00pm.  We decided to venture out of the main town and head up to Cashtown.

The Cashtown Inn is said to possibly be one of the most haunted places in and around Gettysburg.  (Though the owners of Farnsworth House will tell you different).  We went in to have a late afternoon snack in the quaint little tavern located in the inn itself.  (Those of you readers who perchance happen to visit, will be delighted at the historical pictures and overall ambiance of the place.)  Being an "off" month for tourism, we were lucky enough to have a chat with the owners of Cashtown Inn.  It was then that we were told that although they do not deny that the spirits which haunt the inn exist, they do frown upon those tourist who come in sit down and rudely say "OK show me some ghosts".  As I have said before, don't look for the spirits, they'll find you.

Interested in the historical aspect of the place, we were told of how A.P. Hill used the Inn as his headquarters during the days that preceded the battle.  We were also informed that when filming the movie "Gettysburg" actor Sam Elliot (who plays Gen. Buford) chose to reside at the Cashtown Inn. (Sadly, Mr. Elliot did not report any ghostly tales).  We were then asked if we'd like to look around being that the Inn was not booked for the night and all rooms were empty (or were they?).

Heather and I ascended the stairs to the second floor.  I need to point out that Heather, after her first handed experience at Pickett's charge, was a bit skittish about what may or may not be around the next corner.  Also I might add that it is I who is the ghost enthusiast and Heather would be none-too-happy if she did not run into any ghosts.

The rooms on the second floor are numbered (and named after generals from the battle but at this present time the names escape me).  Going in counter clock wise fashion, on your immediate right hand side is one and two and on the left hand side is three and four.  Room number five is on the third floor and happens to be a suite.

My sister entered room one as I stayed in the hall admiring the beauty of the place.  Soon, I too entered room one, to find Heather nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.  I said "What's up?"  She replied "The door closed."  "Get out," I said, "you're just imagining."  To prove me wrong, she opened the door to the room again.  I watched and slowly but definitely, the door did in fact close again.  I laughed.  We left room one and watched once more as the door closed (on it's own) behind us.  Still laughing and shaking my head I urged her to forget about it.  We went on to visit the other three rooms on the floor and then ascended to the third floor to see room five.  Upon descending the stairs back down to the second floor, we looked at room one again and my sister dared me to try the door once more.  Still insisting that she was looking too hard for something to happen, I humored her request and opened the door and stood back to watch.  All of the sudden, as if the spirit was really getting annoyed at us for taunting him, the door forcefully slammed closed once and for all with a loud BLAM!!!!  Needless to say we were convinced that Heather was not looking too hard, I was just not opening my eyes wide enough.

That's about all for now, I'll be sending you another real ghost story soon.  Once again welcome back. :)
