But, a person with some expertise in photography will recognize most of these photos as double exposures. This is merely two pictures, superimposed. Each picture is usually lighter than normal, in some areas. This is a natural phenomenon, and often looks like a ghost. The reason that it doesn't happen so much anymore, is simply because cameras are built to prevent double exposures. So in other words, cameras are much more reliable these days.

What about recognizable dead people? That's hard to explain without dealing with specific photographs. But, pick up an old photo of a ghost. Was this photo actually taken after that person's death? You probably don't know. Most often however, a picture is taken before death and the next picture is superimposed after death, so the photographer inadvertently created an impressive ghost. Also, some people look like their ancestors, and may be mistaken for them, if the picture is faint enough.

It should also be mentioned that sometimes "motion blur" can also play a role as well. Objects, birds, dogs, and even humans can look like streaming ghosts. Combine that with a double exposure and the photo can look pretty spooky.

So, we need to be especially mindful of double exposure when viewing older pictures. Of course, it is still possible to achieve the effect these days as well, with the right camera, settings, and specific accessories. This effect is used by photographers only when wanting a particular look or illusion. We include 5 double exposures below as examples.
