Restaurant spirit passing by!
Jennifer
writes, "Hello, my name is Jennifer and this picture was sent to me by a
family member. Everyone was dinning at a Bertucci's restaurant and a family
member took a couple of pictures. The man in the picture is transparent.
You can see the wall and the pictures hung on the walls right through
him. No one was walking by when this picture was being taken either
according to the family member. Please let me know what you think Jim.
By the way, I love your web site and am very much a devoted fan."

Matt writes, "I made a couple of observations regarding the restaurant
spirit picture, don't know if they are of interest - but here they are anyway;
while the foreground group is lit by a flash, the background of the restaurant
is lit with available light (hence the orange tungsten glow). Don't know
exactly how bright it might have been in there, but usually this type of venue
is subtly lit to add atmosphere. In my opinion this would indicate a slow
shutter speed would have been necessary to give enough exposure to the
background - perhaps half a second. Enough, in any case, for somebody who was
in the action of sitting down (or even walking along) to disappear from shot -
leaving a "hole" in the place where he moved from. Add to this that
he too (or his shirt at least) appears to be lit by a blue (flash or natural
light) tint and It seems to me as though he's been caught with a bit of
fill-in flash as he moved through the background. I personally use this technique
(albeit much more exaggerated and deliberately) in a lot of my photographs.
Perhaps it's happened accidentally here? would love to know type of camera,
exposure (if manually chosen), whether camera was on a self timer etc, etc.
And to see a higher resolution example!
