Robin writes, "My husband and I honeymooned
in Virginia this past May, and after researching the beds and breakfasts
in the Williamsburg area, we were interested in a specific inn that had
a melancholy history. The Edgewood Plantation was apparently the home
of Lizzy Rowland, who waited at her window staring down the road
awaiting the return of her fiancé who was away at war. In fact, she sat
at the window so long, that she managed to carve her name in the window
glass (which can still be seen when you visit!) Before he could make it
home to her, he was killed in the Civil War. Apparently, Lizzy died of
a broken heart soon after hearing the news. Legend now says that Lizzy
still waits at the window watching for her lover to come home. The
innkeepers promised nothing, insisting that Lizzy never makes her
presence known when the house is full. Unfortunately, we never saw
anything, but we ended up leaving early because of the tremendous
sadness that overcame us when we were in the room (not good honeymoon
feelings!) At any rate, on our way out, we snapped a few pictures of
the inn for memory's sake. When we got them developed, there appeared
to be an odd bluish haze in the "Lizzy" room window. So, I scanned it
in, cropped the window, and wouldn't you know........Lizzy. She appears
to still be staring out the window."
