Robin
writes, "I'm a historian and author of
regional history books. I'm currently
working on a three-volume pictorial
history celebrating the Bicentennial of
Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Volume One
covers the area's history from 1801 to
1920. All of the photographs I'm using
were taken by Grit newspaper
photographers. Grit was a
national newspaper that began in 1884 in
Williamsport, one of the most
prestigious papers of all time. USA
Today is its contemporary
replacement. The photos I've attached,
one cropped high-resolution, one
low-resolution, cropped Web image and
one low-resolution un-cropped image, are
of a photograph I am using in one of the
chapters. It appears to be the home of a
black family, possibly a laundress who
has spread clothes and blankets along
fences and lines. A small black boy is
playing in the yard, standing next to a
broken wood stove. Behind the little
boy, over his right shoulder, is the
image of a small, friendly white boy.
I'm amazed that the image is present.
I've never seen anything similar to it
in my work, and I've processed thousands
of historic photographs. I scan the
photographs I choose to use at a high
resolution and then zoom in to note the
details that will be of interest in the
cut lines. When I zoomed into look at
the boy, I noticed his "companion." My
daughter has encouraged me to share this
with you since it is the first I've
acknowledged as a possible "ghost"
image. This photograph was taken circa
1910-1920 in Williamsport, PA, by a Grit
newspaper photographer and was scanned
by myself this week (August 2005). It
has not been altered in any way, unless
the original photographer added the
specter in the darkroom nearly 100 years
ago. Hope you enjoy it. Best wishes,
Robin Van Auken

Wolfman writes, "this photograph was
taken about a week ago (the first week
of August). We had just gotten this new
camera, a Canon Rebel 2000, and we've
been taking many pictures to test it
out. One of our favorite things to take
pictures of around here is our pets.
This photo is one from a sequence of
about four that we took of our Brittany
Spaniel, named T.J. . In all of the
other photos the dog is looking right at
the camera. However, in this photo as
you can see, he was looking up at
something. When the photo was processed,
I was surprised to see what he seems to
be looking at. I don't know exactly what
it is, and my first assumption was that
it is a bug. It's shape resembles a
dragon fly. However, I do believe that
we would notice a dragon fly flying
around our living room, which we did
not. Again, this was taken on a Canon
Rebel 2000 SLR, and if I remember
correctly, it was taken at around ten at
night. I don't know what this is, if it
is a bug, an angel, or tinkerbell...
it's none the less interesting. A little
side note, we have had some paranormal
activity in our house before, so it
doesn't surprise me that we caught
something on film. Thank you for your
time."

comments:
I just wish this
person would have been using a faster speed
film. A stop action shot would reveal much about
this photo... and that would answer the question
as to whether it's a ghost or possibly even a
fairy-like creature. Of course we can't
completely rule out a bug but that would be one
rather large bug in the house. |
